The price is high but I agree with the Mayor, we need to make a downtown and this is the first step. A town square, outdoor rink and modernized condos are perfect for that spot. The price was high but they will easily make that money back when they re-sell the land.

Why are we still obsessed with having a “downtown” in Ajax?. It’s a little late to be thinking about this now. The planners had the opportunity 60 years ago to design something. It still wasn’t too late even 40 years ago when Ajax was still considered a small town.
Look at how Ajax was developed. The original “shopping district” was where the old Pennyworths was located. The CIBC plaza was built around the 50s or 60s and had many shops including IGA. The donut shop used to be Canadian Tire. Across the road where Food Basics is located, this was Woolco and Miricle mart. Before we knew it, Bayly was being develooped. Then came Hwy 2 and Westney Road. Now we’re seeing Rossland and Taunton being gobbled up with homes and stores. So, it’s absurd to believe we can still have a downtown. Everything is spread out. That’s something we need to accept. Unlike Ajax, Whitby, Bowmanville, and Oshawa have beautiful downtowns. They are older and were planned out better.
I do think 5.5 million bucks is a lot of money for this piece of land. I remember many years ago that there was some talk of constructing a windmill there. Never happened. I do think this piece of land should be turned into parkland. Plant trees and put a pathway. Do we really want more condos and plazas?
Nobody can accept the fact that shopping, dining, and recreation is spread out across this town.
